Two of the most visible buildings in North Park sat dark for years and then opened two days apart. In the second week of February 2026, Bacari opened in the old Urban Solace building on 30th Street on a Monday. That Wednesday, Brad Wise's À L'ouest opened in the long-boarded corner at 3002 University Avenue, directly under the sign.
Four months later, a block east, the corner's most decorated arrival served its last dinner. Reading those dates together explains the corner. Since late 2025, every room that opened around 30th and University has been built for brunch, late hours and drop-in dinners. The restaurant that asked diners to commit to a fixed multi-course evening is the one that closed.
Two big rooms in one week
Bacari's arrival started with a property sale. In the Union-Tribune's May 2025 account, Arsalun Tafazoli of CH Projects bought the vacant Urban Solace building, along with the building next door that houses True North Tavern, in a two-property deal the county recorder's office put at $5.6 million. Robert Kronfli of the Los Angeles–based Bacari group had already noticed the New Orleans–style facade while walking past. Tafazoli told the paper the building's long dormancy bothered him, and that North Park "has always been special."
Bacari opened at 3823 30th St. on Feb. 9, 2026, its first San Diego location. Its posted schedule reads like a list of the corner's priorities: dinner every night, brunch and dinner on Saturday and Sunday, service until 12:30 a.m. on Thursday and 1 a.m. on Friday and Saturday.
À L'ouest was a bigger bet. According to the Union-Tribune's opening-day report, the 4,800-square-foot brasserie cost $4.5 million and seats more than 200, with imported Italian marble, a glass-enclosed kitchen and windows that open onto 30th Street. It is the 13th restaurant from Wise's Trust Restaurant Group. Wise told the paper that city plan approvals took eight and a half months even with paid expediting, which pushed the opening back from the previous summer. The lease also came with a rare liquor license that allows alcohol service into the early morning hours.
Wise was clear about what kind of restaurant he built:
"As soon as you call it a brasserie, you know what this is, because on the weekends, we'll be open from morning until night, serving essentially brunch, apéro hour, dinner and then into a little bit of a nightlife."
Upstairs, by spiral staircase, sits Georgette's, an 800-square-foot cocktail lounge with 38 seats. The Union-Tribune's April review reported the lounge was about to debut and described a street-facing walk-up cocktail counter that runs until 1 a.m.
What 3131 University tried
Drew Deckman's restaurant at 3131 University Ave. opened in August 2024 as 31THIRTYONE by Deckman's. It was the first U.S. restaurant from the chef behind Deckman's en el Mogor and the Michelin-starred Conchas de Piedra in the Valle de Guadalupe. The three-story, 4,200-square-foot building held a 50-seat dining room, a 10-seat chef's counter, a private dining room and a 32-seat rooftop cocktail bar. It opened with a $125 three-course tasting menu.
The Union-Tribune's June report traces what came next. Reservations were booked six weeks out at first. When sales eased, the Deckmans adjusted step by step: a softer dining room, an à la carte menu, a new chef's counter concept, lunch with a signature burger, and finally a new name, Deckman's North. Every change moved the restaurant toward the more casual format its new neighbors opened with.
Deckman's North closed after dinner service on June 27, 2026. The Deckmans are focusing on their Valle de Guadalupe restaurants, and Drew Deckman told the paper he will continue as a food purveyor at Petco Park's The Draft by Ballast Point.
North Park said this once before
The Urban Solace building that Bacari now fills held an earlier version of the same story. When chef Matt Gordon closed Urban Solace in 2019, the Union-Tribune reported, he said sales were no longer keeping pace with costs and that North Park diners seemed less inclined to order multi-course meals.
The 2026 openings read as operators taking that lesson into account. Restaurant broker Pasquale Ioele of the Urban Property Group told the Union-Tribune in February that the neighborhood "is looking to redefine itself," adding that "there have been a lot of bar-centric restaurant concepts and now they're more food-driven." The newer rooms keep the food ambition and drop the commitment. À L'ouest serves steak frites with a choice of three cuts and a raw bar, and it also pours at a 1 a.m. walk-up counter. Bacari's menu runs to lamb hummus, glazed pork belly and pizzas.
The smaller openings on University fit the same pattern. Carne y Hueso, which debuted in December 2025 at 3140 University Ave. #102, comes from sisters Chantelle and Crystal Godinez. It serves moles, huitlacoche tetelas and a birria built on their grandfather's Guadalajara restaurant recipe, at dinner and weekend brunch. On weekend mornings, the first dozen tables get complimentary pan de muerto, according to Eater San Diego. One of Us opened July 16, 2026, on a corner at 3085 University Ave. The gastropub streams professional women's games daily and serves coal-fired pizza on 72-hour fermented dough. Axios San Diego covered its opening day.
The corner, by the hour
Each of these rooms covers a different part of the day, which is the clearest sign of how the corner has been rebuilt.

The À L'ouest hours come from the Union-Tribune's April 24 review. Opening-day plans called for an eventual move to daily dinner, so check the restaurant's own booking page before you go on a Monday or Tuesday. A few doors up 30th, CH Projects' Leila at 3956 30th St. has been taking reservations since 2024 and was still bookable this fall.
Two addresses still in play
The next test of the pattern is on University Avenue:
- 3131 University Ave. Eater San Diego's summer closures roundup noted the Deckman's North closing and named no successor. Whoever takes the three-story building inherits a rooftop bar and a chef's counter on the busiest stretch of the street.
- 2877 University Ave. In April, WhatNow reported that Chop Suey Lounge & Ginger Roots planned to reopen there later in 2026 with a cocktail lounge and a reservation-only chef's table. The pairing of a drop-in bar with a small reserved format suits what the corner has rewarded, and no firm opening date has been announced.
November around the corner
The steady anchors near 30th and University keep running through the month:
- North Park Farmers Market, every Thursday from 3 to 7:30 p.m. at 30th Street and North Park Way, per North Park Noise.
- Community cleanup, Saturday, Nov. 14, 10 a.m. to noon, meeting at North Park Union Cowork, per North Park Main Street.
- North Park Vegan Food Popup, the same Saturday from noon to 4 p.m. at North Park Mini Park, 3812 29th St., with more than 60 vendors on its usual second-Saturday schedule.
- North Park Business Mixer, North Park Main Street's annual gathering, Thursday, Nov. 19.
- Boardgaming Night, Friday, Nov. 20, 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. at Playground Art + Coffee, 3043 University Ave.
A $4.5 million brasserie and a farmers market a few blocks apart now share the corner, and both are built around an open schedule.
