Affluent ocean city with a historical past
From its conception, Del Mar was a place of delight and luxury. The scenery is stunning, the weather is near-perfect all year, and the city is full of amenities that support an active lifestyle. Whether you live here or are just visiting, be sure to find your way to L’Auberge Del Mar or Fairmont Grand Del Mar for an unparalleled taste of luxury.
When Theodore M. Loop, a contractor who helped build the railroad from San Diego to San Bernardino, first saw Del Mar, he called it “the most attractive place on the entire coast.” He settled here in 1882 and was soon followed by a man named Jacob Taylor. Taylor envisioned the area as a resort for the rich and famous, so he bought over 300 acres of land and created Casa Del Mar. The original hotel burned down, but it was rebuilt into the stunning resort it is today.
